Birthday Celebrations For Te Horo Institute

The Te Horo Hall recently presented a festive scene when about 70 visitors, representing seven institutes, branches of the Women's Division and the Plunket Society met at the invitation of the Te. Horo Institute to celebrate its 18th birthday. The president, Mrs. Clark, on welcoming them, expressed the hope that all would have a happy afternoon. In opening the programme, a dozen Irish colleens (all local members) were introduced and proceeded to entertain with Irish choruses and mimes, costumed in character, interspersed with wit, solos, duets, recita'tions and the Irish jig, all receiving hearty applause. At the conclusion Mrs. Styles was introduced as the producer and presented with flowers. The points prizes for the year's competitions were then presented by Mrs. Johnson to Mrs. Sutton (best flower and homecraft) and Mrs. Shirnack (decofative). These two ladies also received a special prize donated by Mrs. Strom for most "entries. The president, on behalf of riiembers, asked Mrs. Johnson to acdfept a small gift in appreciation of her pasttwo years' service as president; this was accompanied by a lovely posy of flowers, and Mrs. Johnson returned thanks to all the members. Following afternoon tea, which was set out on tastefully decorated tables, the highlight of the afternoon was the cutting of the lovely birthday cake. This was made and iced by Colleens Shirnack and Spiers. Greetings and floral trib- . utes accompanied the lighting of ' the candles by visiting prefeidents • and past presidents of the insti- - tute. Mrs. Hawkins, Te Horo's first president, recalled the first meeting 18 years ago and Mrs. Jensen, a foundation member and past president, blew out the candles. ' The president of the Southern Wellington Federation, Mrs. Powell, in a happy speech, congratulated the ' institute on behalf • of the federation and then proceeded to put the cake. Following a social chat this happy birthday concluded with " the singing of the National Anthem.
