AUCKLAND, Mareh 31. Charged with stealing £718 the pxo-» perty of the New Zealand Shippin'g Company between Deeember 29, 1948,. and February 26j 1949, while steward in charge on the Hororata, Douglas Stanley Mowatt, aged 29, appearech before Mr. F. McCarthy, S.M. Aceused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentenee. Frederiek Arthur Freeman, shore ehief steward of the eo'mpany, ' gave evidenee that the captain had given the •accused authority to jlraw money from the company 's offi.ce shortly before the vessel was due to sail for England. Accused was reported missing. Deteetive Harkness, • of Hastings, said he had interviewed accused who had made a statemeut admitting appropriating the money some of which he had loaned to men on the ship and some of which he had used to purchase hams. He sold these to members of the crew.
