School Diamond Jubilee Arrangements

A general meeting of the varioiis committees connected' with :: the making of' arrangements for the Shannon School's diamond jubilee celebrations, which are to be held over the King's Birthday- weekend, was held in the school on wednbsday. The chairman, Mr. R. J. Law presided over Messrs. L. J. Bowler, J. T. Bovis, F. O. Burtt, D. 'A. Fitzgerald, E. Barber, K. Mitchell, F. J. Lucinsky, T. S. -Downes and Mpsdames F. O. Burtt, W. Easton and K. Mitchell. An apology was received from Mr. A. Richards. Mr. Law said he was sorry to see such a small attendance, but the meeting was called at short notice and there were a number of * other meetings on in the tbwn. However, he expected that greater interest would he taken at the next meeting, when further progress h'ad been made iby the various committees. He then called upon Mr. Bovis to report on the activities of the circulation comimittee. Mr. Bovis said that his committee an'd a bfemd of helpers had sent out almost 1000 circulars to ex-pupils, teachers and committeemen. Some of the letters had been returned as the addresses were unknown, and others had been returned toecause the addtressees were now dea'd. However, in all, there had been a good response and almost everyone who had replied had expressed the hope to be, present for the celebrations. Several donations were also received. About 75 per cent. of the replies received were from outsi'de the town, added Mr. Bovis. Mr. Burtt made mention of the excellent work done by Mrs. Bovis and moved that she should be appointed a member of the general committee. This was agreed to. At her request, Mrs. Mitchell was transfered from the banquet committee to the advertising and booklet committee. Mention was made that Mrs. Mitchell had rendered valuable assistance in compiling the souvenir booklet at the last jubilee. With regard to the programme for the Sunday, Mrs. Mitchell jstated that at the; last . jubile^ a religious service had been .overlooked, and she asked that, this should ZLot be the; case -this time. On her motion it was agf eed that a committee be set up to make arrangements in this direction. The coilmittee appointed comprised Mesdames Mitchell, W. Easton and Mr. E. Barber. It was stated that to date 13 pedple attending the celebrations required accommodation. This matter was left over until a later meeting. Mr. Law reported on a meeting which representatives of the School Jubilee Committee had had with the Shannon Football Club, which is also celebrating its jubilee at that time, and said that a further meeting would be held as soon as a report was received from the jubilee ball committee. It was intimated that the two organisations would combine for the ball. Mr. Lucinsky reported that he had engaged a six-piece orchestra for the function and other arrangements were being attended to. Prior to calling upon Mr. Downes, of the advertising and booklet committee, to report, Mr. Law expressed thanks to Mr. Downes for the publicity he had given the jubilee. In his report Mr. Downes said that he had arranged for an announcement to be made over the national broadcasting stations regarding the jubilee, and to his knowledge this has been done, as several replies had been* received in response to the broadcast.
