Beach Stores Exempt From Holiday Lesislation
Exemption from the provisions of legislation concerning the observance of certain public holidays has been granted Paraparaumu Beach Stores Limited and eight others by Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in a deferred decision given in the Wellington Magistrate's - Court. The case was heard at the February sitting of the Otaki Court. The days in respect exemption was sought were Boxing Day, New Year's Day, the day after New Year's Day, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday, King's Birthday, Labour Day and Anniversary Day. Grounds set out for the exemption by Mr. B. N. Vickerman, for the storekeepers, were that it would not substantially affect the business^ of any other shop, and that it was desirable in the public interests that the applications should be granted. "I agree that each of these app'ications must be carefully scrutinised," said Mr. Goulding. "The nearer one gets to large centres of population where shop£ are numerous, the more sparingly should exemptions under the Act be granted. "Here," however, he went on, "I am satisfied that, having regard to the locality, the influx of visitors at holiday times, and the comparatively small number of shops spread over a fairly wide area, the applicants have made out a case for exemption, and I therefpre grant each application. Each shop will be entitled to open on the days annlied for."
