Borough Council Meets

The Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fi'tzgerald, presi'ded over the usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening. Present were: Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, H. L. Norris, R. S. Downes, C. M. Cronquest, L. G. £|ayer and H. Aitchison. An apology for absence was received from Cr. C. G. Wishart. The chairman of the reserves committee, C. Clayton, reported that the grass in the cemetqry grounds had been cut and arrangejpents were being made to have the domain grounds attended to. Cr. Bateman, chairman of the huilding committee, reported that an application for a building permit from a Ballance Street resident to erect a garage was in order and qn his motion the necessary permit was issued. Regarding the erection of a shed on a property in Stafford Street, this matter was left in the hands of Cr. Bateman with power to act. The chairman of the library committee,, Cr. Norris, stated that the library was pragressing well and. there was nothing; to report. Cr. Sayer, the works committee chairman, reported that most of the work required on borough streets was under general maintenance, but he gave a report on new work that could be considered for the forthcoming financial year. With regard to his suggestion that the tar primer on hand be used as an experiment on a selected piece of street, this was agreed to on the motion of Cr. Aitchison. There was consi'derable discussion on the sanitary arrangements being installed in the State house units at present under \ construction, and it was resolved that the •town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, write to the Minister of Housing pointing out the council's objection to the ■type of convenience being installed in the new houses. The t.own clerk was authorised to communicate with the New Zealand Standards Institute relative to huilding by-laws. The business of the meeting terminated with the passing for payment of accounts amounting to £100 2s 4d. This sum included £39 2s 6d for wages an'd £60 4s lOd to the Manawatu Catchment Board •for rates collected on its behalf by the council.
