Colder Weather Shortens Season's Activities

"Freestyle")

' (By

The conclusion of the c'ub swimming carnivals was apparently the signal for the weather to deteriorate. At the commencement of the season conditions were below expectatidns and caused most clubf to make a late start with their activities. However, taking the season as a whole, it has been fairly good. The Levin club deci'ded to give its members a break from a strenuous season by having a spell before swimming off the club championsnips. Perhaps this, but more a likely the coolness of the weather, has caused a wane in interest. Neverthe.ess, the Manawatu centre has been on the job and one or two decisions may be of interest. It has been 'decided to maintain the junior, intermediate and senior grades next season and all clubs must ccnform to them. The Foxton Cups, which have been donated for senior and junior inter-club boys' and girls' relav competition. will be inaugurated. The cups will be competedi for at each carnival and1 the teams aggregating most points at the end of the season will hold them until the commencement of the following one. A gratifying comp'iment was paid the Levin club by the referee of the championship carnivals in his remarks supporting some form of standard coaching. Two members • of tne local club had been the only swimmers he had seen wh3 stood out prominently for good coaching, training and style. They were Janet McClune and Richard Routley. There is now a proposal afoot to stage a system of stan'dardising the method of coaching within th3 centre for next season. I sincere y trust something beneficial wi'.l come out of it. There is also ever/ possibility of inter-centre meetings ■ being held, In general next sei - son's outlook is bright. The Saturday morning learners' hour has proved most successful. It has now ceased operations for thj season.
