AUCKLAND, March 3Q. Awakened by the crash of falling bimiber and - clouds of choking smoke, Mr. R. Charleston, a tenant of a .small flat above a grocer's shop on the corner of Amy Street and the main highway at Ellerslie, rushed from the bedroom to find che main stairway blocked by a wall of flames just before ' one o'clock this morning. Cramming a few clothes and personal beiongings into a suitease, iVIr. Charlescon leapt out of the dining-room window on to the verandah. He then crimbed through che bedroom window of another flat in the same building. The grocery, store below was badly damaged by smoke and a small storeroom at the back was gutted. A radio and electrical shop and another flat in the same building were undamaged. The concents of. Mr. Charleston's flat were completely destroyed, ihcluding stored furniture. The pro-p-erty belongs, to the de Luen estate and is administered by the Guardian Trust. Two fire brigade engines brought' the blaze under control iri half an hour.
