Reuter reports that 40 perso'ns were AilJed and an unknown number injureu fvhen the British registered Hong Kongdanton luxury steamer "Miss Orienf 4ruck a mine when six miles trom ^anton last night. One report stated Aat the ship was carrying 500 passengersr A Chinese ship which followed •'Miss Orient" is reported to have picked up 22 survivors. The casuaitins are believed to be mainly Ghinese. The mine is believed to have beeu laid by bandits. The ship belongs to one of more than a dozen Chinese and British companies which received deuiands for "prot^ction money ' ' ' in recent months. Aviation cdmpanies and banks in Canton have also beeu threatened.
