Last Clnb Carnival Of Season Held
(By
The last of the club carnivals was held at "Woodville on Saturday, a large party from Levin making the. J trip. It was indeed unfortunate j that the weather broke, for about a third of the programme was held in heavy showers of rain. A strong westerly wind was also blowing, causing the water to become rough iand making vision difficult. It was also most disappointing that the two main 'attractions, the junior relay races for the Foxton cups, were not held owing to a technicality. In passing I would like to comment that I [.do not approve of trophies for individual competitors. There are exceptions to all rules and in this case X do approve on the excuse that these cups are for teams', For .the veiy short time they have been operating they have aroused no small1 amount of enthusiasm, which is . i just the purpose for which they, jwere donated. On receipt of the, ,news that these two events were toj take place, two teams were quickly formed by the local club and, .tffcer tne first competition, places in each team have been keenly, .sought. These competitions should igive a tremendous impetus tq junior swimming next year. Keith Lines' Success Disregarding the weather and I disappointments, the whole pro~! Igramme was run off, with Levin swimmers gaining a fair share ' of success. Keith Lines, who did wellj at the beginning of the season, liasj trained off lately but came back toj finisn the season by winning the) 100' yards men'S freestyle in thei ivery good time of 64 2/5 secs. This is the season's best time for this distance. Darcy Rikihana showed his versatility by winning the junior boys' dive from a large field. He . also had success from a back mai'k in his heat of the boys' race. Warren Travers, a junior, swam a very good race. He finished second to nis club mate, R. Cameron, an intermediate in the boys' 100 yards freestyle. Cameron incidentally j has improved a lot over recent carnivals. I Prue Rcbbie, Diana Rathbone jana June Miller finished in that jorder in the girls' 33 1/3 yards ' oreaststroke._ Levin also won the flying squadfon, the team consisting of K. Lines, D. Batten, R. Denton and J. Ryan. ! The Levin club championships : will be he.d on Wednesday next, j March 30, at 7 p.m. If the weather: 'is not suitable, they will be heid unj the Thursday evening: Intending i competitors are asked t'o hand in j their entries promptiy.
