Had Been Sentenced To Death Overseas

WANGANUI, March 23. A man who admitted that while servv, ing overseas with the New Zealand forces he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death pleaded not guiltv in the Police Court at" Marton to common assault- on a girl aged 16. He was convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour. He was Isaac Johnson, married, of Marton Junction. Under cross-examination by Sergeant V. B. Arnold, defendant admitted that when serving with the forces he was convicted of murder and sentenced tc death. That sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he returned

to New Zealand to serve his time. He was released last year. He also admit- . ted under cross-examination that he had twice before been convicted ot assault — in Feilding in 1938 and Marton in 1940.
