Drivers Move To Oust Union Leaders
- AUCKLAND, March 22. A special meetiiig of the Auckland Drivers' Union to consider the removal of the union 's permanent officials has heen requisitioned by the organising committee of the union. 's moderate group. The same committee requisitioned t last Thursday's union meeting which decided by a large majority to lift the drivers' hoycott in support of the Carpenters' nninn. Under the union's rules the coming meeting must be called within seven days,. : "As a resuJt of the widespread deniand and of evidence ldst week of noeonfidence in the jjolieies advoeated and supported by the officers' of the Drivers' Union a further requisition has been placed today in the hands of the secretary (Mr. L. G. Matthews),y' said the statement issuej' by the committee tonight. With their iiiterest and realisation of their obligation to .'the trade union movement reawakened the rank and file members have a paramount desire to reha.bilitate and present themselves onee again as a respeetable and reasonable body of men who will no longer be eoerped, threatened or led by the nose in support of a poliey implemeuted by a few. "The drive.s now fully realise the tremendous powers which they can exercise either for good or bad in view of the f'act that transport is the lifeline of industry, " concluded the statement. "This plaees their organisation in a' ' unique and responsible position, and the state of affairs through. which thej' have been unwittingly compromised will no longer be tolerated. "
