Russian Sentenced To Jail At Old Bailey

A Russian Who was alleged to have engaged in a "confidence fcriek of the most fantastic dimensions" was, at the Old' Bailey today, sehtencbd to four years' penal servitude. The man, Abr aham Barnett Kritz, aged 57, was found guilty of jbtaihing £72,000 by false pretences from the Midland Bank. At a -previous hearing it was said that Kritz persuaded five people to ofive him unlimited' use of their oanking accounts. He pr-esented their cheques at a branch of the Midland Bank and drew out the money before they were cleared. He Daid in- money to the accounts to meet the cheques, presented more cheques and drew out more money, making use of the four or five days ii took to clear the cheques. When the bank stopped the practice in 1946 his acCouht had a mrnover of more than £1,800,000 in tne previous twelve months. It was stated ih court that each of the five persons who allowed Xritz to use their banking accounts .vas now bankrupt.
