AUCKLAND, March 2L. Close voting marked this year's contest'for the position of president of the 'Auckland brauch of the Waterside Workers' Union. Mr. fi. Barnes, national president since 1944, was ieelected for the ninth successive year to the Auckland presidency with a nxajority of about 160 votes over Mr. H. D. MeAven, former ■ branch secretary and national president of the Harbour Boards Employees' Union. Last year when" he was oppqsed for the lirst time since - 1-943, Mr. Barnes had a majority df about 400 votes over Mr. J. Connor. Mr. N. Donaldsoh retained the position of vice-president by a margin ot just over 500 votes from Mr. A. Drennan whom he defeated last year by 35 votes. The branch secretary (Mr. R. E. Jones) retained his post, def ealing Mr. B. Cameron by more than 1200 votes. Mr. Barnes stated the meeting decide I in accordance with the deeision of the Auckland Trades Council on Thursdav night to lift the boycott on certaiu firms, but the union pledged all possibie
