Record Downpour Isolates Queenstown
DUNEDIN, March 21. Queenstown on Lake Wakatipu was isolated over the weekend. Uxxtil this morning the only means of transport out of and into the town was the steamer to Kingston. The heaviest f all of rain in 24 hours ever recorded in Queenstown, 4.8 inehes on Friday, caused the town creek to flood and sent a torrent of water down the main street, Ballarat S&feet, eausing consid^ erable damage. The rain started at 6 p.m. on Thursday and eontinued without a break until Saturday afternoon. Yesterday was brilliantly finC, but a change of wind to. the west brought further steady rain this morning. The total rainfall recorded for Friday and Saturday Was 6.4 inehes. ^Ironieaily the lown water supply failed on Saturday and water had aetually to be pumped ' from the lake by a fire brigade pump. There was also a break in the electric power from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. The first bus passengers since Friday got away this morning for Dunedin and timaru, but had to walk over a slip on the road to Cromwell and get into another bus on the other sidg.
