MAN REMANDED ON ASSAULT CHARGE

CHRISTCHURPH, March 21, When Samuel; Arthur Protheroe, farm hand, of Ashburton, aged 42, was charged1 ih the Magistrate's Court this mprnhig with assaulting Brian O'Connbr at Chertsey on Friday so as to cause actual bodily harm, he was remandedf until next Monday. Mr. Rex C. Abernethy, S.M., graiited toail at £30 in Protheroe's own recognisaiice, with two surefci'es of £300 each, Protheroe to repdrt daily to the police. .. After Mr. D, W. Russell, for Protheroe, had applied for toail, Detective Eergeant G. W. Alty asked that it be substantial, as a m4n had! been found1 dead in a battered condition on Saturday night. The cause of the man's death was unknqwn.
