Eye-witness Story of The Wreckage
WELLINGTON, Mareh 18. An eye-witness description of the Lodestar wreckage was given tonight by Plying Officer George Washington, of Wellington, who discovered the missing airliner. " All that remained was a large piece of crumpled metal and one wing," he. said. "I had no trouble identifying the wreckage as the wing was clearly ^ visible and smoke was rising froih the scene. '* ' He had been unable to see any signs of survivors if there were any. "Plying conditions were bad and a heavy niist or fog which blanketed the hillside for most of 'the day made-it impossible to get close to the plane. ' ' An attempt to lead. ground parties to the wreckage failed, due to the wea ..ther, he added, Planes had to with- ( draw at about 5.30 p.m. wheh the fog closed tight ■ down. In company with other airmen Elying Officer Washington expeets to take ofl! from Ohakea at 5.30 a.m. tomdrrow on cooperate with the ground party making its way to the crash.
