Shopkeepers' Protest At Street Days

An application for permission to hold a shop day for the -food /for Britain fund on Friday, March 25, and a petition froni five shopkeepers not to grant any more applications for such activities brought forth some lively comment at Wednesday night's meeting of the Otaki Borough Council. The shopkeepers, Messrs. A. F. Brown, J. Hing, I. Tomlinson, C. Brooks and F. Redrup, stated that "owing to the repent heavy fall of business due to tlie carnival activities in this town, we would appreciate your not granting any. more permits to operate pavement stalls." "• The application was made on behalf of All Saints' Ladies' Guild. The council agreed that so long as it had no defined policy on the matter of restricting shop days, each application would have to Ibe decided on its individual merits. "We are here to do the most good to the greatest numbqr," was one of the comments made. Cr. E. J. Cook: The Commercial Association is not against the applications when there is no profit for individuals. Cr. G. McKinley: If this fixture was held in a hall or off the street, the applicants would probably do better. Cr. K. Ames: There have been plenty of shop days lately. We should endeavour to consider and fit in with the views expressed by the local shopkeepers. Cr. H. W. Hakaraia: The shop days which were held ;during the carnival will in due course benefit1 shopkeepers, as well as everybody else. At this stage it was pointed out that a recent advertisement in the Press advised that the Rangiatea Ladies' Guild was holding a similar function in the Raukawa grounds on the date applied for. It was felt that there would be no desire •on the part of the two guilds to clash, and 'it was decided to refer the application back to the All Saints' Ladies' Guild, pointirig" out that the objection had been lodged and suggesting that it might renew the application at a later date.
