Electrification Of Main Trunk Railway
WELLINGTON, Mareh 16. Although the British Railway Engineers' Gazette states that the first North Island contract in the scheme to electrify the main railway lines will embrace 800 single track miles of line, the General Manager of Railways (Mr. F. W. Aickin) said today that in his opinion the tally would be nearer 600 miles. Th'e main line between Paekakariki and Auckland would take in 400 miles and in addition an estimate would have to be made of the additional mileage required in laops, some sidings aild crossings. The double line. from Auckland to Southdown also had to be included in the' tally. Mr. Aickin said he would be very surprised if, as the British Railway Engineers' Gazette stated, British engineers would be flown to New Zealand to launeh the scheme. A team of that size would push the scheme forward far quicker than was planend. The Minister of Railways (Air. Semple) had emphasised that the electrifieation programme would be tied up with availability of power. _
