Australian Banking Act In Last Stage
LONDON; March 14. The last round of the Australian banlc nationalisation fight begah today, when the judieial committee of the Privy Council opened its hearing of the Federal Government 's ease. ■ The Governnient is appealing against the Australian Hig'h Court 's decision invalidating the Banking Act. • Seven Lords of Appeal, under the chairmlanship of Lord Porter, began their hearing of the appeal. Although sev^n Lords of Appeal have previously heard a Privy Gouneil appeal, this practiee is vefy rare. It was decided that the eniarged board should sit, beeaiise of the great constitutional importance of the case. "The statement of the grounds for the "Commonwealth case spreads over 33 printed pages, and the banks' case oceupies 59 pages. The appeals from the High Court' 's five orders declaring section 16 invalid and grautiug injunctions are "c(">nsolidated. Oue of the most brilliaut arrays of counsel ever assembled iu oue case will argue the points which the Privy Council will be ealled upon to decide. «
