CHRISTCHURCH, March 13. : At the New Zealand athletie eham- ' pionships, Canterbury and Wellingtnti tied with -124 points and the count back gave Wellington live championships (120 and 220 hurdles, mile and three miles walk and hammer throw) to Canterbury 's 220 yards, 440 yards and three miles. Wellington were declared the winners for the present year, Generally the racing was of the highest standa'rd. Batten (Canterbury) won the 220 and 440 in the manner of ,a champion, scoring a very easy win in the 440 and being beaten by inches in the iOu yards which was won by P. Henderson (Wanganui) in the good time of 10 seconds when light rain was falling. L. R. Smith (Wellington) showed up as one of the best hurdlers New Zealand has known when he vvon the 120 and 220 yards hurdles, going away from his opporients in the later stages. The half-mile produced a great race between J. C. Grierson (Auckland) aua B. Steel (Canterbury). S. McKenzie (Waikato) and Steel set off a furlong from home to lead the field and after racing each other into the ground, left the lield clear for Grierson to wui nicely. The time, lmin. 55.3sec., was particularly good under the conditions. In the mile race another great contest took place, N. Bates winning well after being nicely placed behind the 'leaders to the straight. The time, 4min. .18.2sec., was the best mile recorded this year, but still short of E. A. Rose's 4min. 13.6sec., made in 1926. The three miles championship was a duel between N. Taylor (Wellington; and W. J. Wells (Wanganui). In the high jump R. McKcnzie aml E. Rhodes, both of Waikato, tied with 5ft. tlin., and in the count back Mcvenzie won. The third man, J. H. Boffand (Otago), could do no better (hau 5ft. lOin. W. B. Hough, who had broken the record in the broad jump on Eriday. | added his second title in the hop, step ; and jump and had no trouble in doing 45ft. 5in. i
D. Steward (Auckland) gave a polished display to win the 440 yards hurdles. He got away smartly and led F. R. Gordon (Otago) and J. S. Williams (Canterbury) all the vvav. His juinping, fast and clean, put him farther ahead at every hurdie, and he won easily by 10 yards in 54.3sec., a time thatj he coukl have improved upon had he been extended. The record of 54.3sec., is heid by. J. M. , Holland (.Auckland).
