Barman Who Ran Doubles Charts
WELLINGTON, Majrch 14. "In vieW -of the results of the recen't referendum on betting, the accused had in-tended to give up the doubles charts next week. It was unfortunate for him that thepolice came just before his retirement," -said counsel for Lindsay Ford Heard, aged 42, barman, who was charged before the Magistrate, Mr. A. M. Goulding, today, with carrying on the business of a bqokmaker, on March 11. Heard pleaded guilty. ! Counsel said that Heard conducted "rat" doubles to cater for his bar customers and occasionally took be-ts for his principal. He had taken £6 14s in -bets for the doubles chart when accosted by the police.' A fine of. £25 was imposed. •
