Plot To Obtain New York Official Secrets
Received Monday, 11.30 a.m. 1 NEyV .YORK, March 13. The Mayor of New York, Mr. Wm. •O'Dwyer, sfated -that the police have •discovered a plot to obtain official city secrets by tapping telephone wires. Later the New York District Attorney announced that he would send evidence of the plot to the Grand Jury. The police' have arrested two alleged wire-tappers but one of them, a retired detective, has since escapfed from custody. He excused himself while being questioned at the City Hall and escaped out" of the washroom window. •City Hall officials said that the inquiries into wire-tapping might involve prominent political enemies of Mayor OTDwyer. The police commissioner, Mr. O'Brien, has alleged that a lawyer hired two men to tap City Hall wires. He- has -subpoenaed the lawyer to appear before the Grand J.ury. According .to .the Mayor the lawyer has ad-mitted that a millionaire employed him to get information .about city government. City officials say that the wire tapping plot involves other cities.
