MAY LOSE LICENCE

Blunt Warning Given Owners Of Jubilee Hotel 1 That . the Jubilee Hotel, Otaki, ^was in such a state of disrepair tiiat there was a grave .like"ihoG'd o.f its licence not being renewed was indicated by the Otaki. Licensirig .Committee when it -met in the Levin Courthouse on F-uuay. The chairman, Mr. A. M. Gnulding, S.M., said that the questioh of repairs to tnis building had been going on for years now, "and the position had become so desperate an'd the repairs so urgent that the committee felt tnat the licence for the notel could not possibly be renewed if nothing was done before it again came up for review. The owners should be bluntly toid that it was now up to them entirely, and that the hotel's licence was in danger. It was stated by Mr. B. H. Rhodes, representing the licensee, Torrence Alexander ■ McFetridge, that the licence for the hotel ha'd been granted again at the annual meeting of the committee „in June on the assurance being given by Mr. C. F. Atmore (for the owners, the Palmer EState) that repairs wouM be under'taken or put in hand. When inspected recently it had been found that none of the promised work had been completed and, as far as coul'd be ascertained, no arrangements to have it completed' had been entered int.o. Mr. Rhodes said that the licensee ,was placed in a very awkward position, as he was most anxious that the repairs be carried out. He was in fact even willing to buy the £ro~ perty. He ha-d already spent £300 on internal repairs and -alterations, which was in excess of his obligations, just to make the pface as presentable as possible. However, he depended on the repairs to the roof and other outside work being done, .and this was the owner's responsibility. The fact that this had not been done had resulte'd in the internal repairs being jusD money thrown away, as they had been rendered- useless by the state of the roof.. Mr. Atmore .had beeri unaware that the matter was. being, discussed that day, said Mr. N. M. /Thomson, who appeared -on his be'haif, The committee instructed Mr. Thomson to convey to the owners, throUgh ■!Mr. Atmore, the committee's • deeision ,and .warrfihg. ^
