The work of setting o,ut its proposais for ' a sound scheme to put before a Government Commission was almost done, the letter said.As a resu.lt of the league's correspondence with local bodies throughout Ne-w Zealand, it was apparent that almqst every local authority •had a sewage and/or gdrbage -disposal pro.blem. The writer en-. closed a- copy of the league's booklet, "TJtilisatioh of Town and Country Wastes, Garbtige and Sewage," which was presented to a Select Commit.tee . of Parliament about tw:o and a half years ago, to-1 gether with some copies of "Soil,: Food and Health," which Mr. Robinson compiled from a.series of his lectures. For the purpose of the commission of inquiry, the league desired to bring to New Zealand several ofi the authorities with whom it had been in constant communication, on the' question, continued the letter. This would cost about £6000 and an appeal was being made to: all local bodies and the public generally for donations to meet ex--penses. The council was under no, obligation whatsoever to contribute,; concluded the writer, but it might feel that the benefits which would; npvnp wmiid fnilv instifv its mak-

ing a donation to as'sist the movement for the conservation of natural resources as a means of increasing national wealth and health. The league had made representations to the Government and as a result a speeial commission had been Set up to inquire into the question, commented the county clerk, Mr. F. H. Hudson, adding that the commission was already at work.

"I don't • think it is our job to contribute," remarked the chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, whereupon the letter was recevied. Boad Improvement Sought The general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. (Wellington) wrote asking the council to g'ive consideration to the- extension of the formed. part of Florida Road, Ohau, as his committee was desirous of - reerecting the main building of a new camp site there before _ the summer weatner had entirely, passed. Thife would give dryweather aceess, thereby making it. possible' to transfer the equipment right on to the site. At present the equipment was staeked at the end of the formed road. The matter had been raised ,at a ptevious meeting and the engineer, Mr. W. H. Fraser, and himself had been instructed to attend to it, commented Mr. Colquhoun. The letter was received. Road To Farm Settlement Tne resident engineer for the Ministry of Works at Porirua, Mr. W. H. Bennett, forwarded fpr the council's perusal a plan of a proposed road at Te Horo, which wouid give access to four farms in the Te Horo farm ' settlement scheme for returned servicemen. The road will run off Station Road, parallel to the main highway, and Mr. Bennett asfked whether the council would take it over for future maintenance if it was constructed in accordance with a prescribed plan. The engineer and the councillors for the riding were authorised to go into the matter and take any n.eces&ary action. » Purchase of Machinery The secretary of the New Zealand Counties' Association, Mr. T. M. McKewen, asked the council to submit by the end of the month its requirements for the 1950 imports of graders, tractors and other construction machinery. It had been decided that the . import

programme for 19oU riom tne United States would follow the lines of that adopted for the current year, he said. It was decided to place an order for a grader, but to refer the quesition of the purchase of a traetor frv wnrirR p.nmmittee.

Sealing Of Road Urged Advice as to the possibility of the remainder, or a portion o'f the remainder, of the Ghau West Road being* tar sealed, was sought in a letter frofn Mrs. M. Coles, of Ohau. The road was as bad as ever a week after the grader had been over it, she reported, ad'ding that it was no easy task to keep a lightcar from skidding in the metalThe road served approximately 40 farms and the amount of traffic increas'ed daily.

This road held a priority among ariy of the county's side roads; said the chairman, in asking for the matter to be referred~to the works committee for consideration. —
