Lind Runs Consistently At Weekly Sports

For the second time this season, unfavourable weather on Monday night fprced the abandonment of the weekly athletic and cycling sports at the Levin Park Domain. My oomments today will, therefore, be on some of the performances of the previous Monday. The senior men's 100 yards saw a stirling tussle- between Lambert, Lind and Ryan, who finished in: that order, Lambert gaining the deeision by inches. The time of 10£ secs. was particularly goo'd, while Lind's effort off scratch was most impressive. This athlete has been „a very eonsistent performer this season. He gave further- evidence of. his ability by winning the 220 yards-* off scratch in 24 seconds after covering a , lot of extra ground. In the junior 100 yards, J. Ryan won narrowly from R. Jeffreys, who has shown improvement during the season, The latter's main fault is his tendency to slow.up in approaching the tape, a fault which I have stressed in more than -one occasion as being most noticeable among some sprinters. The men's field events were well patronised, but it is evfdent that insufficient preparation is being given to jumping events. Training should ,be carried out before the sports, not at the meeting, wnere competition is designed to bring out the fruit of such traming. " Women's Events In the ladies' events Miss A. Rose again ran consistently and showed particularly fine form in winning the 220 yards. Misses jwilliams, Cameron, Tyree and S. j Rose are still maintaining good 1 form, an-d are a quartette to be i reckoned with at this stage of the j season, which has been a particularly successful one for the local girls. Recenfy, competitors and supporters travelled to Wanganui on | the occasion of the a-ppearance of jthe Australian athletes at Cooks' ! Ga.rdens. j • Apart from witnessing some ex- ! cellent performances by the visitors, the evening proved a most successful outing for our' local athletes. Miss S. Rose ran with determination to win the 220 j yard final from Miss Montague i (Wanganui) . Miss M. Cameron was i second in the final of the 100 yards event, and also won her heat in ' the furlong. Misses Tyree and A. Rose qualified in their events, but were unplaced in the finals. C. i Walker ran nicely to win the i men's quarter mile, as also did John Goodwin, who gained second place in the mile event. Of the three cyclists who made the trip, Noel Parker was successful in winning the half miie event, was second in the two mile and third in the three miles, an excellent achievement. S. Bonner qualified for the final of the one mile junior, but fell as the result of another cyclist coming down ahead of him.
