Otaki State School Swimming Certificates

Some 38 children of the Otaki State School were presentedi wita i their swimming certificates this week. A "learn to swim" campaign was held during the last i week of February a,nd quite a nuftii ber of pupils learnt to swim. Jfi ; I A 50-yard stretch was marked off in the Waitohu River at the beach, and the children swam the various distances under the supervision of the teachers. ' . Three boys, Howard Annan, V^c--toi* Jackson and JaSon Middleton, swam 880 yards and obtained - their Merit Certificate, while Robert Clark, Hugh Thorpe and Gordon Jenkins swam 440 yards and received Proficiency Certificates. Robert Eales, Ken Ludlam, John: Rooney and John Climie coverOd 220 yards and Valerie Larkin swam 300 yards; these pupils also received their Proficiency Certificates. Eighteen pupils swam distances from 50 yards to 200 yards and obtained Learners' Certificates, while seven received Beginners' Certificates.
