Labour Said To Be In Better Standing Than Ever
(Per
GISBORNE, March 9. Social t Security benefits in 1948 absorbed! sums in excess of the Consolidated Fund revenue in 1935^6, stated the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, addressing. the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand1 Labour Party at a social gathering. He believed that the .Go'vernment Was in better standing with the electors today than at any time since the late Mr. Savage ied the party to. victory in 1935. Even though prices werb high in New Zealand today, the purchasing power of the average wage measured in goods was 64 per cent highef than in 1935-36, he said. „To justify a high wage scale the country must reach a high production level, otherwise there would be chaos. "We must have a form of payment by resuits, for we can only distribute what we produce," saia Mr. Nash. He warned against specious appeals designed to disintegrate the industrial movement and workers' organisations. This was rue in New Zealand as it was in the wider sphere of world affairs, and it was perturbing to see Comr nunism pressing so closely upon the ndtions, which could use their time and energy better than in combating this menace.
