' WELLINGTON, March 4. The Minister of Labour, Mr. Mc Laga.il, said to-day- when replying to Mr. Stanley, national secretary of the Carpenters' Union, that Mr. Btanley's barefaced audacity in asserting that au other conference between the union and the employers is the ouiy possible solution of the carpenters' dispute, was simply evidence of the diliiculty hn found in excusing liis tactic.s in the dis pute. ' ' Instead of saying that a con ference was the only possible soiution of the dispute, i poiuted out that Mr Stanley's suggestiou of a conference eould only be of any value if it was an indieation that ilr, St.anlev intended to abaudou his preseut tactics and ailow the dispute to be settled by reasoi: rather than by force. Mr. Mtanley has failed to give any indieation of 'his at titude on tliat. point. lLis eyasiveness and lTis crude attyuipt to disclaini his responsibility for the present position. will not docta ve hhy thinking person. ' ' There is anothcr possible -\solutioi, of tlie dispute wMch. is obvious to al. inte'rested oOseryers, ' ' said tlie Minis ter. " The union uould agroe to accept its award and resume nonnal work. Tlu. possible solution should be equall.y obvious to Mr. Staveley unless it is unthink^blq.to hhaiihat he should be ex pected to- abide by his 'undertaking tc accept his awa'fd when made."
