Volcanic Island Now Submerged

WELLINGTON, March' 3. A report receive.d from H.M.N.Z.S. Hawea states that Foriua Fo'ou, . or Palcon Island, in the Tonga group, has disappeared. The Hawea, which was on the way to Apia, reached the ehart location of the island on February 28. Soundings indicated that at the shallowest part there was nine Eathoms of water. Indieations of submerged volcanic activity at the island 's position and a marked subterranean volcanic disturb ance accompanied by a strong sulphurous smell at a position 100 miles to the north were also reported. Faleon Island lies about 57 miles north of Tonga-tapu, the main island of the group, and was first sighted in 1877 Owing to volcanic disturbanees the size and shape of .the island have never remained constant for any lengthy period.
