Britain Still Builds Half World's Ships

Received Thursday, 7 p.m. LONDON, March 3. Britain's lead in building the world's ships, decreased in 1948 but she is stl'i produeing half of them. Aceording to Lloyd's register of shipping, out of 2,309,743 gross tons of ships launched in the world, 1,170,346 tons were from berths in Britain and Northern Ireland. This was 50.9 per cent. of the total compared with 50.7 per cent. in 1947 and 34 per cent. in 1938. Although there was an increase during 1948 in

the tonnage launched in the rest of the world, in Britain there was a decrease of 10,413 tons. Recovery in Europe continued in 1948, Sweden increasing her tonnage by 23,298 tons, Holland by 54,084 tons and Franee by 40,349 tons but in the United States there was a further decline of 38,430 tons.
