BOOKMAKERS ADMIT OFF-COURSE BETTING THROUGH TOTALISATOR IS PREFERABLE
- The Royal Gaminp* Commission heard exhaustive evidence from all •scctions of the commuhity. Even the illegal bookmakers were repre/X sented and admittedi that the ofi-' » eourse betting they handled exceeded £24,000,000 per annum. But they admitted something else. Their counsel conceded1 that any - scheme under which offcourse moneysi pass through the totalisator was pref erable- to betting with individuals so long as .it was workable and gave the public reasonable facilities for placing their bets. The proposal recommended^ by the Royal Commission provides those facilities; an efficient workable system which will enable those who desire to bet ofl-course, to, do so openly, honestly and with respect for the law. On March 9 vote ''For the Proposal." (Issued by N.Z. Racing and Trottinf Conferences.)
