Levin Playreaders May Use Professional Producer

For its 1949 production the Levin Playreaders" may engage a professional producer by arrangement with the Drama Council. The question was discussed -at the annual meetong on WedneSday night, when the president, Mr: G. H. Sorenson, said that a grant had been made available from public funds. The producer was paid £50 plus board and travelling expenses, and the subsidy was to the extent of £35. The producer, who would be made available through the Drama Council, would spend six weeks in training the cast. In Levin's ease he would be here probably from the middle of August until ea.rly in October, Levin's production being in that month under the council's allocation. The Levin society would, therefore, have to find £15 towards the producer's fee, plus board and expenses for travelling. The executive had recently receivedi notice of the Drama Council's plan and had agreed tentatively as applications had been required urgently. Since then he had received word that Levin would be allocated a very well known producer, Mr. Arnold Gordon. Mr. Sorenson added that he had contacted Mr. Gordon, with the result that a meeting between him and the committee had been arranged and would take place during the month. At this meeting various points would be cleared up. The Levin Playreaders would have the selection of the play and cast. Before proceeding further with any arrangement, the committee would like the views of the meeting and also some indication as to the number of persons who would be willing or able to give the necessary time to rehearsals, said Mr. Sorenson. On„ a satisfactory response being forthcoming, it was decided to leave/the question in the hands of the committee.
