Personal -Mrs. E. L. Hyde and Mr. and Mrs. P. Judd have returned home after an exten'ded motor tour of the riorth. Sealing Of Stout Street The -chairman of the works comfnittee, Cr. L. G. Sayer, reported to members of the Shannon Borough Council last evening that Stout Street was in the act of receiving a top dressing to the sealed surface of the street. The work was progressing very favourably, added Cr. Sayer: Highway Sealing A start has been made by the staff of the Horowhenua County Council in applying the secon-d coat of surfacing to the ShannonMangaore main highway. The work is being commenced from the top end of Grey Street and . is proceeding towards the town. The priming eoat has been breaking up rather badly on this section of the highway. Carnival Opening Tomorrow evening will see the opening of the Shannon War Memorial Queen Carnival, when the combined committees will present a grand concert in the pruids' Hall. Local' and visiting artists will entertain and the two flueens, Miss Joyce Woodmass (country) and Miss Margaret MacLean (town) will be intro'duced to the public by the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald. It was agreed that no competitions will be conducted at this concert. School Jubilee Replies are being received daily by the joint secretaries of the Shannon School Jubilee Committee from persons desiring to attend the celebrations in June. Donations are also coming forward from expupils, teachers and committeemen. With the influx of visitors to Shannon over the jubilee period the town's accommodation will.be over-taxed. This will be one of. the many problems facing the committee when they meet again within: 'the next week of so. • Ladies At Bowls : Many members of the Shannon! Ladies' Bowling Club attended the . green on Tues-day afternoon for the usual club day. The singles championships' were taken a stage further when Mrs. Wilson beat Mrs: Edmonds, Mrs. Lind beat Mrs. Coghlan and Mrs. Aitchison beat Mrs. Wilson. Last Wednesday a visit was paid to Levin, but unfortunately rain prevented play. Pictures To Be Displayed At last evening's meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, suggested to the acting-chairman of , the library committee, Cr. R. S. Downes, that the pictures of early Shannon and the Construction of the Mangahao hydro scheme, which are now hanging in the Council Chambers be displayed in the library for, a time. Mr. Fitzgerald said that the pictures were of considerable local interest and only the few who attended meetings in the Council Chambers had the opportunity of seeing them. Several ■councillors expressed the same view, and Cr. Downes stated that he would have two or tliree of the pictures displayed in the library from time to time. It was mentioned that - as the twenty-fifth anniversary of the opening of the Mangahao scheme was to be celebrated this year, the pictures would have more than passing interest.
