Dual Purpose Party At Shannon

Mr. and Mrs. W. Eastion, of Newtown, entertaine'd more than 120 guests -at the Parish Hall on [Thursday evening last, when relatives and friends journeyed from Feilding, Bunnythorpe, Palmerston North and Foxton to join those from Shannon and its environs in honouring the coming-of-age of their second daughter, Mavis. For the occasion the guest of honour wore a dainty ground-length white organ'die frock, trimmed with vaienciennes lace.. , • A fraternising competition quickly had everyone in happy mood and dances interspersed with items made the time for young and old pass pleasantly. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Bowler's tliree young sons, Ashley, Garnet and Milton, , gave tap dances, as 'did Miss Ngaire Peach, and recitations were contributed by Master Rex Elston. Supper was served from long tables placed down the centre of the hall, at the head of which' was a large pink and white iced birthday cake made by anxi the gift of Mrs." J. P. Allerby. The M.C., Mr. J. T. Bovis, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, mentioning many former Shannon residents by name. Among them were the paternal grandparents of the guest of honour, Mr. and Mrs. W. Easton, Senr., of Foxton, and Mr. and Mrs. W. Grey and their son, Mr. Maurice Grey, of Bunnythorpe, to whom the function was of more than usual interest. Miss Joan Radford presenteid shoulder sprays to the guest ofi honour and her mother. A large golden key, which was! later autographed by all, was given to his daughter by Mr. Easton, who paid tribute to her as a land girl and his right han-d "man" or; the farm. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, speaking for the gathering, congratulated Mavis on attaining her 21st birthday andi expressed the hope that she would| have many more happy birthdays. He thanked Mr. and Mrs. Easton for giving them the opportunity of congratulating their 'daughter and proposed a toast to Mavis. | At this stage the announcement was made of the engagement of the guest of honour to Mr. Maurice Grey. The birthday cake was cut with due ceremony, flashlight' photographo recording the scene. Mavis thanked everyone for the | presents given to her which she appreciated very much and her fiance also spoke. Mr. L. J. Bowler, in proposing the toast to Mr. and Mrs. Easton, thanked them on behalf of those,. present for their hospitality. Mr. Easton suitably replie'd. Mr. W. H.
