Gun Club Re-opens After 31 Years In Recess

■ m % Originally formed in 1912, the Shannon Gun Club was a popular' attraction for district sportsmen with dog and gun, as it helped them to keep .their eye in during the period before the opening of the shooting season. In those days the local club • was one of . the strongest in the district, . with a membership of over 20 'sportsmen. Ciub championships and inter-club : competitions were conducted in I which local enthusiasts held. their own. However, when war broke out jin 1914 the club went into recess, and was not revived after the armistice in .1918. - Now, after being in recess for 31 years, a group of interested sportsmen have recommenced to .shoot j and by coincidence , have. chosen the same site as that usCd by their club mates' of '31 years ago, the traps being installed on the north side of the Otaru Stream, on Mr. P. J. Cole's property, near his woolshed. • The local club held its fifst offlcial shoot-just over a, *week ago, jwhen visitors were present from I Foxton and Palmerston North. I.Offlcials from these clubs rendered valuable assistance and helped to 1 make the day the outstanding success which it was. Although weather conditions were overcast and dull, making the "birds" hard to pick up-v some ■ good scores were obtained and the trophies so generously donated by local businessmen were evenly distributed. * • . 'At the afternoon tea interval, Mr. S. W. Barber. extende'd a welcome^ to the visitors and thanked them for their support and assistance.
