Women's Institute Holds February Meeting
There' w'as a fair attendance at the February meeting of the Shannon Women's Institute, which was held last Wednesday afternoon and presided over by Mrs. W. Easton. Members stood in silence to express their sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs. Gage, who was an institute member, and with Mrs. Spackman for a recent bereavement in her family. A letter from one of the children eoncerned was received, expressing •gratitude to the institute for the recent children's party at Foxton Beach and expressing the hope that it would be possible to make the trip an annual event. Miss V. Munford wrote thanking the members for congratulations sent her on the report of her recent musical success. Mrs. Fitzgerald complimented the committee responsible for the party at Foxton Beach, and moved that a similar function be ■ held . annually in preference to a Christmas Party in the hall. This was unanimously agreed to, as was a recommendation to the incoming committee "that in future a set sum be handed to the delegate to Dominion conference to help cover expenses." It was agreed to again provide the Anzac dinner for all returned men and women in the district on Anzac Day, and a special committee to organise the effort is to be set up at a later meeting. Arrangements for transport to the group rally at Opiki next Wednesday were made and the cast selected for a humorous sketch for the entertainment competition. Members were asked to enter as many 6-inch posies as possible in the banner competition for that day, and were notified that the Dominion secretary, Mrs. L. Horn (Wellington) would be the guest speaker. It was agreed to hold a street stall this month to augment institute funds, and promises, of goods for sale were freely givern Nominations for the annuai meeting were received as follows: — President: Mesdames C. Stern and D. Fitzgerald; committee: Mesdames Burling, A. Riehards, ATigust, R. Lester, and all the standing committee members except Mrs. W. Easton, who is not seeking re-election. Competition winners were: — Bloom: Mrs. H. Stern 1, Mrs. C. Stern 2, Mesdames Tremewan and Thorne (equal) 3. Cluster: Mrs. C. Stern 1, Mrs. A. Riehards 2, Mrs. Tremewan 3. Shrub: Mrs.. H. Stern 1, Mrs. C. Stern 2, Mrs. Roberts 3. The special competition for next montii is iftree plain- scones.
