Sunday Charges Other Than For Charity Illegal
The fact must remain that allowing charges for entertainment on a Sunday was illegal, said the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, when recommending that a pr-oposed deputation from the Levin Military Band be not received. The band, at the last meeting of the council, was refused permission to make a charge for entrance to a Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening band concert at which an nntside band would be in attendance. "The police have quoted the law to me in detail and it is breaking the law to allow gate charges on Sundays," continued Mr. Burd'ekin. The only exception was where tiie whole of the proceeds were being donated to a charity, otherwise it was legally regarded as a . trading concern. "The position is quit'e clear and it does not require a deputation from the band to teach us the law," added Mr. Burdekin. Ofi being put to vote it was decided to decline the request that a deputation be received, and that the position should be explained to the secretary of the band.
