Women Have Big Task After Corso Drive
Saturday's successful house-to-hou^e collection did not mark the end of the Levin Corso committee's work for the present drive. One look into the R.S.A. rooms in Oxford Street yesterday provided ample evidence of that. Almost overflowing out into the street were- stacks of newspapers, neatly folded and bundled up preparatory tp their sale to business shops in the town. The wasfce paper was being packed into sacks ready for despatch to a- paper pulping firin. . Busy at the job were the committee members and outside helpers, who throughout the heat of yesterday toiled away under the supervision of the president of the committee, Mrs. H. B. Burdekin. Piles of shoes and clothing, all of which will eventually find their way to the needy persons of postwar Europe-, were also noticed. The fat collected will be retailed to a soap works, as with the mixture of various types it would be unsuitable for domestic use. _ The jnoney so realised, however, will go to provide other comforts. The clothes and shoes will be sent to Corso headquarters in Wellington, wnere they will be packed for shipment. Seen working in the rooms yesterday were the following: — Mesdam.es T. C. De Mey, A. V. Morgan, H. W. S. Walker, C. H. Rathbone, E. C. Bott, D. C. Hamilton, M. Fulton, G. R. Lester, A. Bonner, M. Hall, L. Travers, A. T. Cartwright, E. Moxham and H. B. Burdekin, Miss M. Selby, and Mr. W. Hatch. Their task was far from an enviable one, but all were bright and obviously had their heart in this work, for which they receive no reward other Lhan the satisfaction of a job well dorie. •...
