Excellent Attendance At Weekly Sports

With a perfeet autumn evening and an attractive programme', citizens attended in la-rge numbers at last night's Weekly meeting of the Levin Combined Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club'. Added attractions were the first appearance Sinee thei-r suceess in the recent contest of the Horowhenua High.land Pipe Band and the pupils of the Jean Scott School of Dancing in Highland numbers. ! . \ Tne seeond rOund of the Hunter Shield saw Levin gain 99 poihts, Otaki 24, Foxton 22 and Shannon 17. The opening night at Foxton last Thursd:ay resulted in Otaki; being plaeed first with 61, Foxton gaining 54, Levin 48 and Shannon 16. The fields were large in athletic : and Cycl-ing eVents and Some of the t finest racing seen on the track this season resulted. The match races for. the go'd and silver helmets for senior and junior dyclists respective'y Were ekciting, N. Parker winning th'e trophy for the second time, whi'e O-. Connelly was suceessful in takihg the silver trophy. A la'rge field started in the children 's tricyCle event, Master GalTaghe'r gaining first place for the boys and C. Gillespie for the girls. Com'mencing simultaneously with jthe children^ running events the jfoll'owing artists contributed dancing items: Sean Truibhas: Nahleen Wa-ltofi and Colieen Dobson; Highland fiifig: Heather Young, Robin Frew, Jeanette Cottle, Jeanette Boddy, Delva Horn and John ElliO't; sword dance: Heather Young, GWen Davison and Audrey Cameroh; Irish jig: Colieen Dobson; sailor's hornpipe: Nahleen 'Walton. That the audience appreciated their efforts was reflected in the appiause accorded each group. The q'uickstep dispiay by the Horowhenua Highland Band was well received and was the sigrial for prolonged applause at the concluBibn." The president of the club,Mr. W. Cribb-, in co-ngratulatin'g the b&fid on its fine performance at the recent cohtest, said that it was akin to the St. John Ambulance Brigade — -it onLy had to be a'sked and it was readv to turn out. The club took pritie in- being the first to publiciy congratulate the band on its exeeiieht performance. Mr. Cribb also congratulated Miss Mavis Cameron, who won the ladies' events at Wanganui on Saturday, Miss. S. Rosq, who gained second plaCe, and Noel Parker, who won the 'two-mile cycle. In conclusion, he extended thanks to the band,, 'Miss' Sco'tt's pupils and ihe 'public who attended in such large numbers.
