e AUCKLAND, Feb. 20. The nine niembers of the Australian ainateur athletic team uow touriug the Doininion, perform&l with great distinction in their appearance at the Auckland eentre carnival on Saturday. Iii 16 events in, which they competed , they vvon 11 first places, six secoiid, and one thir.d. The four New Zealand, ehampions, J. O. Grierson, J D. Sinidair, It. McKeazie and W. Horop, wei'e among the defeated. M. Curotta, Miss Shirley Strickland and 1'.. Mullins (vvlio himself won four , e.v.qnts) ,provejl outstanding among the Australians but E. W. Carr ran in beautiful style in defeating GriersSn in the quarter-mile, and D. S. Marks beat Sinclair in the outstandiitg raee of the day, the mile. Otherrf of the team, G. G. Avery, G. Goodacre, D. A. White and E. Strickland, all performed well in various events. Wliite and Strickland were the onlv members not to win a first plac.e. The Olympic 400 metres finaiist, Curotta, showed brilliant forni to anuex the sprint double. He dominated the 100 yards leading from the gun to the tape to beat Strickland by one yard. The time off 10 secouds was good considering the slow s'tate of the track. Curotta also registered fast time in the 220 yards invitation race wfiich he won in easy fashiou by two yards from Carr who headed off R. .S. Agate by three yards, in 22.1 secouds. A short runner of nuggety build, Curotta rau- with a quick driving stride which got- him under way in a very . short distance from the start. .
The national junior 880 yards record holder, N. T. Q.-WiJson, added anotli'er record to liis credit in a successt'ul attenipt on the New Zealand junior record of .'!uii'ns ISsecs for the 1320 yards, a distance held Ly W. H. Nelson. Wiisou 's time of 3mins lOsecs was an exceptiouallv good. ruu And of special merit in view of the fact that he had outpaced the rest of the field at the end of the first lap and rau the greater part of the race unpaced.
