Repercussions to Australian Attacks On Dutch
Received Sunday, 8 p.m. CANBERRA, Feb. 20. It is understood that the recent unbridled attacks by Australian officials on the Dutch, have had these serio.us repercussions: — Firstly, the Netherlands is now ready to accept the view that' hostility to Holland is the considered policy' of the Australian Government. Seeondly, the British Government is believed to be deeply concerned about the deterioration of relations between the two countries. . Thirdly, there iko-3 already been a decline in trade between- Aus.tralia, Holland and. the Netherlands Indies and a further deeline is.expected.. Many iehding'- Dutchmen ■ have telephoned the Duteh Minister in Canberra,Mr. P. E. Teppema, denranding stronger action. Alost say'that nothing less than a full retraetion by the Minister of Immigration, Mr.; Calwell, or the Prime 'Minister, o-f ■ statenients made by Mr. Calwell in the House, will satisfy Dutch honour. The New Zealand Government is understood to be watching the situation closely.
