CONCERN EXPERSSED

Unsanitary Condition Of CattleYards The condition of the cattle yards and pens at the Shannon Railway Station - was -described as* = "most unsatisfactory!', by the ,pistrict Health ln$pec't'oy, Mr. W. J^G-uinan, in a report " to the Shannon Borough C0un.ci.Ldiscn.5sed at Tuesday's meetings.' — "A concrete save-all pit has been installed , but - the. design vis f aulty, anvi it is useless. * AlSp it 'is too small," reported the inspector."The effluent it has to deal with is - most diffcult and becomes 'almost liquid. It requires a very large pit to allow it to become soill and let the solids settle. Also^. all storm j water from the concrete pen area gets into tLe. save-all. As the amount of stormwater is sometimes very large it is not possibie to deal witn it in a suitable saveall."

The inspector pointed out that the outlet of the present save:all was on.;to the street , and along the street drain. At present the drain was full .of.Vrank growth and tnis stopped the'flbW of water and held back the1 sqli'ds.' This was a new nuisance." "If the drain was cleahed "out the .effluent - would flow down until it ' hiet Stansell's Drain. This would rnean pollution and could not be allowe'd. The inspector suggested that as the Railways Department had plenty of land between the pens and Vance Street, they put down two or three soakage pits and take the effluent from a new and ehiarged save-all to them. . - . : Cr. L. G, Sayer, chairman of the works committee, reported -on •similar lines - as the inspector an'd on the motion of Cr. H. Aitchison it was agreed to send a copy of the letter to the department concerned and ask if anything can be done in the matter.
