Carnival Jottings

The Otaki War Memorial Carnival has another ten days to run as far as activities by. the various queen committees are concerned, and Monday, February 28 is tne date fixed for announcing the winner. Whatever the oiltcome it must be conceded that all workers have done a grand job. The "man in the street" has sorted out a favourite, but it is obvious by the many activities yct to be decided, .that the race is not yet over, and surprises have happened in similar events. It was expected by many that the matinee race meeting would practically decide the. issue in the Maori Queen's favour, but' at this stage many of her keennest supporters are inclined to change their views slightly. Having reached the top of the barometer, the Sports Queen publicity agent, Mr. W. Connor, the popular chairman of' the committee, states that from now on her position is "over the fence in the nearby p^ddock," and that the others will be set a "merry chase." Tnere is an air of quiet confidence in the Citizens' camp, and fhey have certainly maintained a most consistent showing, and many expect that this candidate wiH be a big danger to the favourite. The same position applies to* the Farmers' candidate, and her> hard-working . committee ' show no c.ign of relaxing their efforts and beseech. their supporters to "don't falteb, but follow the farmers," and it is felt by many that they have their trump card yet to play, while many feel the same respect for the Textiles capdidate, and there is no lack of confidence in this camp in the belief that outsiders often surprise. The immediate. advertised activities of the candidates' committees include a shop day and a paddy's market on Friday, a card evening in the Textiles' hall on Friday'night, while at Manakau a dance is to be held when all'queens will share in the proceeds. A garden party on Saturday afternoon, and a grand variety concert on Sunday night will see the semi-final week brought to a'close. One or two .final "flutters" have already been decided on, and a grand dance at Ohau by the Textiles' committee is expected to be the event of the carnival. On the following day greyhounds racihg, and athletes and cyolists will be seen in action on the Otaki domain implementing the Sports funds. In connection with the card evening held at Textiles' hall on Friday last, the management apologise that on account of sickness there was a delay in the starting time of this function. They look forward to making up for any slight inconvenience . caused when the next of the series is held this week. '
