Small Attendance at Weekly Sports
The attendance at the weekly club night of the Levin Combinsd Amateur Athletic and Cycling C-m was not as large as usual last evening, due no doubt to the f ull . day enj'oyed by • most citizens at the band contest on Saturday, while there being no meeting last Mon'day, owing to the previous Saturday being the annual bpen meeang also had its effect on the attendance. The club would be* well advi'sed once the season starts to carry on each Monday niglit.' The only cause for postponement shouid ibe the weather, as the public has been educated to expect the meetings, and once the sequence is. ibroken citizens make- other arrangements for their entertainment, and the club and competitors .suffer filike. • Highlight on last evening's programme was the five-mi!e paced cycle race and this' developed into ■a particulariy fine race over the 'last lap, Noel Parker and Ross Harper fighting q,ut a wheel-to-wneel •flnish, the former gaining the ver,dict by a wheel. Two match races and a final for juniors for the sil•ver helmet were staged, Wilton, "Otaki, defeating' Bonner, Levin, to he the first holder of»this coveted trophy. j The field events attracted much ' interest, L. Giles securing the high jump for men at 5 feet, whhe a newcomer to the bfoad. jump, Kyra King, seeured the women's event at 14 feet 8 inches. B. Haka'raia, jumped 18 feet 7 inches in the men's event, and P. Ryan seeured 37 feet 7 inches in the hop, step land • jump. Busy Week Ahead for Competitors ' This week will be the busiest competitors have had this season, as on Wednesday night they wil1 journey to Palmerston North to compete at the open meeting, the occasion being the appearance of the Australian cyclists, Sid Patterison (Olympic representative) and Keith Reynolds, the bus for competitors and supporters leaving at 6 p.m. Thursday night will see the second round of the Hunter Shield competition commence at Foxton, the bus departing at 5.45 p.m. West Coast Cycling Champs At Wanganui » ✓ The West Coast Cycling Championships will be held at Wanganui on Saturday night, and the Levin club will be well represented, athletes- also making the trip to take
part in the handicap events. The bus for Wanganui will leave Levin at 3.30 p.m., the meeting commencing at 7.30 p.m. Levin/ cyclists also made the trip to Palmerston North last Saturday to compete in the" handicap events run in conjunction with the West Coast Athletic chainpionships. Ross Harper was successful in winning the mile race and was placed second in the half mile.
