j The college had opened under conditions much more promising than had been anticipated, commented the principal of the HorOwhenua- College, Mr. N. A. Byrne, at a meeting of the advisory board last night. The intake of students had been larger than was expected and the total enrolments ^ had remained practically stabie. IThe school was fully stalfed and° the prospect was for a much more settled year's work. Mr. Byrne submitted the following .figures regarding roll numbers for the committee's consideration, those for 1948 being given in parentheses: — Senior school. — Gir's: 133 (119); boys: 134 (133); total, 267 (252). Junior school. — Girls : 76 (89); boys: 82 (91); total," 158 (180). Total enrolment: 425 (432) . • The motor workshop had been completed and would be in use when' the evening school classes opened on Tuesday, February 22. The Education Department had approved of a grant for the establishment of an . office for vocational guidance work on the landing of the library stairs and for the provision' of ameni.ties and furniture for the staff room and the girl prefects' room. "This grant we will be able to spend our-! selves arjd we won't have to wait at all," he commented.' Remarking on the length of time it took for business to be conducted with the board, Mr. Byrne said: "I don't know; sometimes my patience gets very tried."
