MOST VIOLENT UPHEAVAL SINCE TARAWERA.
WANGANUI, Feb. 11. After the most violent volcanic upheaval since the Tarawera eruption, Ngauruhoe this morning became enveloped in cloud, and the rumbling which hasi been almost continuous since Wednesday is now punctuated by less frequent explosions and mlnor earth tremors. A reporter who spent part of last night at the Mangatepopo Hut, found* sleep im-possible, and frequently grasped a verand'ah post as the earth gave a mighty shudder after a violent eruption. The heaviest disturbance was at 4.30 a.m. and for minutes after the last gigantic r.ocks had returned to the earth they . could be heard thumping their uneven way down the mountainside. At -the Chateau, the night was described! as the most spectacular yet, with heavy subterranean explosions and awe-inspiring eruptions at irregular intervals. There is no conflrmation from any quarter that lava is flowiug.
