Today's activities at the national rifle meeting at Trentham were confined to the service champiopship. which consisted oA deliberate, rapid and snapshooting over open sights without the aid of slings. • f Heading the final 50 who will shoot off on Fridgy morjiipg for the Ross Curbiue Championship belf are 1. II. MacDonald (Alfredton) with 232 and R. H. Nicholl (Petone), former winner of this championship as well as the King's Prize match with 231.. An outstanding feature was the scor•ing of two possibies eaeh by F. Bowes (Auckland) and A. H. Russell (Opaki) in the deliberate aud snapshooting at p(J0 yards, a meritorious a.ehievement. Tomorrow the championship series will be resumed with three Jong rapge inatches — Taranaki and SouthJand (H()(l yards) and Auckland (900 yards). At the conclusion the 50 leaders will be announced for the final shoot at 900 yards on Friday afternoon for the King's Prize.
The excejlent standard of championship shooting to date is reflected in the liigh scoring. W. Oakley (Christchurch), the leader, has dropped only II points in four matclies, aggregating 289 out of a possible of 300. For the same four , matches iast year ' M. Gordon (Okawa), who finished second for the Belt, was leader with 279. No fewer than 2(5 riflemen have bettered 279 this year. Match No. 1 (300 yards deliberate and snapshooting) : £5, D. V.
