Canned Vegetables For United Kingdom
HASTINGS, Feb. 9. The New Zealand canning ijidustry is to supply the United Kingdom witb approximately £.300,000 wortli of canned foodstuffs. This was announced by Mr. J. Wattie, of Hastings, president of the New Zealand Fruit and Vegetahle Canning Federation today when intimating J;hat he had received adviee, that the British Treasurv had authorised the expenditure of this amount. The greater part of the order, said Mj. Wattie, wouid comprise . toniato products, green pea's and soup preparations. In . anticipation of the order preparations were made months ago and a! ready supplies had been coming to
hand. For some months to come the canning industry would be kept fuliy occupied in meeting the order which would be placed throughout the industry in New Zealand. Included in the order was a special fruit spread whieh had been developed by the loeal canning industry for the English niarket. No frnits would be exported from New Zealand under this contraet, said Mr. Wattie, for the reason that there were insuffieient stone fruits gr,QWn in this fountry even to meet local niarket requireinents.
