SWIMMING NOTES

Encouraging Attendance On Club Nights There was an excellent attendance at club night at the Levin swimming baths on Wednesday. The juniors were in full force and got througn much good work. After half an hour's practice at starting, quite an appreciable improvement was noticed. A few mo're times were recOrded, but there is still room for improvement nere. The interme'diate section also did some training, though the members require more concsntration on the actual work. The seniors were also on the job and the men had a tryout at relay work. The teams to contest the Y.M.C.A. carnival at Palmerston North on February 17 for the Levin > Cup will be selected this v/eek. The team as such will need considerable training beforehand. Prospective members can learn from the foilowing cDmments: — Keith Lines has now broken 70 seconds, but should concentrate on turns. Keith is k model ail m.em-| hers should follow in' regard to training. He is really fit and does his dozen or so lengths each time he enters the water. He should go a long way at forthcoming carnivals. Des. Batten is perf orming quite weil. He is one of the pillars of the club and his time is much divided. He should now cancentrate on serious training. Des. Jacobs is also doing nieely, but requires more actual swimming. He is capable of breaking 70 seconds with more work. R. Denton is another member in the sarne ca.egory as Jacobs. Dick, unfortuna.ely, is han'dicapped by lack of time for training. The same applies to club captain A'.ec Fletcher, who goes well over the short distances. Talking of short distances, rtminds me of the last appearance of Cliff. Wills. We would like to see more of you Cliff. Trevor Hudson is one of the bright prospects, but must do more training to make the team. He has capabi'ities. The foilowing are the dates which have been allocated for carnivals : — Dannevirke, February 12; Y.M.C.A. (Palmerston Ncrth) , February 17 ; Pahiatua, February 19; Levin, February 26; Red' Cross (Palmerston North), March 2; Palmerston North, March 9; Foxton, March 15. The Manawatu championships will be held at "Palmerston North on February 22 and at Dannevirke on .March 12. Watch out for the programmes. There was a very large crowd for the learners' lessons last Saturday morning. In future only absolute non-swimmers will be permitted to attend. Those desirous of improving will have to join the club for this privilege. It is the club's intention to visit as many carnivals as possible this season, so members are asked to watch for the elosing dates for the various entries, and to hand their names to the secretary promptly, together with times and any other information required.
