HOROWHENUA CRICKET

"Not Out")

Newly-Won Cup at Stake On Saturday

(By

The Goldfinch and Cousins' Cup, won by Horowhenua from Sourhern Hawke's Bay on Anniversary Day, will be at stake on Saturday when Horowhenua nieet Manawatu B at Weraroa. The match commences at 10 a.m. and stumps will be drawn at 6.30 p.m., the luncheon adjournment being from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. For those who have not seen our representatives in action this will be their opportunity. Of the players who journeyed to Dannevirke, Rice, Hudson, Barraud, Galloway, Harris, Carmont, G. Sciascia and Saunders have again been selected. The remaining two berths have been filled by Ryburn and Dorne, while Wilson, of Weraroa, is twe'fth man. It is a great pity that F. Baunmber was not available, for while being an exceptionally good wicketkeeper, he is also an outstanding bat. The team is a particularly strong one, the only player who was lucky in gaining a place being Carmont, of Foxton. He has served cricket well over the years and has a'ways played the game in the right spirit, but the preferenee today is for the "up and coming." Abandoned Matches And now these average points that have been credited to teams which did not complete their games because of rain. Of the two games played on November 20, one resulted in a flve point win and the other in a twopoint draw. The total for the two matches is seven, an average of three and a half. The half- was left off and all teams playing in abandoned matches were credited with three points, so Foxton was the only team which did not collect points that Saturday. On December 4 two matches were again played. Two teams obtained five-point wins. The total for the two matches was ten, an average of five. All teams playing in matches abandoned on account of rain on that day receive five points. Levin and Otaki are the on!y teams which did not receive points that day. I do not know what clubs think of the idea, but to me a game not completed on account of rain, is a draw. The points awarded for a draw may at the present time be a little low — perhaps they could be brought up to those awarded for a "tie," but I do not think that to bring in this system of average points where a team may be awarded full match winning points without completing a game, or rather both sides secure match winning points, will not prove very acceptable to some clubs. Executive Notes Further notes from the last meeting of the management committee. A fuT third round will be played unless unforeseen difficulties arise. The cricket film arid lecture will not be held now until February 23 as Mr. Charlie Oliver, one of the lecturers, has been called to Aucx'and. Admission is ls and ladies are welcome and invited. An advertisement will appear in "The Chron^ icle" on Monday, Tuesday and We'dnesday next. Saturday's Play Reviewed Botn Weraroa and Shannon had eight-point wins last Saturday, so the position of the leading teams remains the same. Weraroa in their match with College dismissed their opponents rather cheapiy and then commenced to throw away their advantage by painfully slow batting. J. Ryder 'did swing the bat with great force, but to score runs it must hit the ball. A Saunders was the batsman who demonstrated how to get to a ball and jpunch it hard. I should say that his exhibition on Saturday was one of the best he has given since coming to the Horowhenua. Of the College bowlers I saw, McLeah did impress and .his main object now will be to strive to obtain greater control of the ball, and, when he 'does obtain this, Horowhenua batsmen will have another bowler to worry them. Levin had a five-point win over Paraparaumu and have F. Baumber to thank for it. His 70 odd runs were collected in a workmanlike manner and I'm quite certain that if more had been required he could have got them. I am sorry to see that at times Frank's interest in the job is not as keen ,as it used to be. This app'ies to both his keeping and batting. Nevertheless, it is admitted that when absolutely neeessary he can slill turn on those excellent displays. It was pleasing to see Paraparaumu with eleven players on the field as, the last few Saturdays they have! been short. Evans showed up as a1 good all-rounder with 47 runs and a good bowling performance.! Keogh did not get as many runs as usual, but he is a good batsman an'd the opposirig team is always pleased to see him out. When the senior competitions resume on Saturday week, the two leading teams, Weraroa and Shannon, meet on the Weraroa Domain. It will certainly be an interesting game.
